Weekly Keys: How do you feel?

It's Mental Health Awareness Month, and it just so happens to be Mental Health Monday. Which honestly, it should really be a regular occurrence every Monday throughout the entire year. A chance for us to check in with ourselves and dive into what we are feeling and why we are feeling that way.

I recently had a huge "ah ha" moment with my therapist, and it was earth-shattering enough I wanted to share it with you all.

Let me ask you a question: How do you feel?

*pause* I'll wait after you think about how to respond. I am interested in knowing what you responded with, an emotion, a thought, or a physical sensation?

The reason I ask is that, honestly, there are too many people in our society that do not know the difference between the three. To add insult to injury, a lot of us don't truly know how we feel because we are only ever concerned with how everyone else feels.

-The process you use for your mental health is going to require you to stop looking outside of yourself and begin taking a deeper look within. The beginning work starts in differentiating between your thoughts, emotions, and physical sensations. As individuals, we need to understand that our "bodies" are more than just the physical sense, and our society's approach how to identifying what we are feeling leaves so many layers of our mental health unaddressed and causes deeper issues that surface only after festering for months or even years. It is unhealthy, and someone trying to take back control of their mental or physical health is going to be willing to do the work.-

Don't forget, part of the work is in setting the right atmosphere while you contemplate what you are going to write in your journal. If you need help with that, I am attaching our First "Weekly Keys" blog that has some great tips on how to get focused as you prepare to journal.
